Free Passes For The Art Of Getting By, Seattle Only

Have you ever wanted to go see a movie before everyone else can? And for free? Well if so, you are in luck! As you might have noticed, we have been putting up a few Early Screening articles over the past couple weeks. These have all been movies that we have checked out and wrote a little piece on before they have came out to the masses. Now you don’t have to do any writing yourself; in fact, you get to just have fun and enjoy the movie, all for free.

Today we are giving away some passes to go see The Art of Getting By, starring Freddie Highmore, Emma Roberts and Michael Angarano. We have 150 passes for The Art of Getting By, so if you want to see the movie, it’s pretty simple. Go point your web broswer to gofobo.com/rsvp (you will need to register), enter the code PLTN4G5V, and RSVP; it’s really that simple.

This screening is going to be on Jun 16, 2011 at 7:30 pm over at the Regal Meridian 16 theater. If you can’t make it, please do yourself and the rest of our community a favor and don’t RSVP; there are a limited number of tickets.

You could also do us a favor by passing this post around, and sharing it with your friends. Letting them know about this helps us use all the tickets, which then helps us to have the chance to give more away for future movies. And if you do use them, do us another favor and just tell us thank you in the comment section below. This is a lot of work for us to setup for everyone, so a little appreciation would be very welcomed. It helps motivate us to do more things like this in the future.
Alright, now for more about The Art of Getting By: The Art of Getting By stars Freddie Highmore as George, a lonely and fatalistic teen who’s made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, who is befriended by Sally (Emma Roberts), a beautiful and complicated girl who recognizes in him a kindred spirit. I really knew 0 about this movie, but after watching the trailer (which you can see above), it looked kind of interesting, so I’m really looking forward to seeing it next Thursday. Hopefully I’ll see some of you there as well.

Be sure to also “Like” The Art of Getting By over on Facebook as well, so you can be kept in the know about everything that’s going on with the movie.

I want to add that this movie is also first-come, first-served. They do overbook on purpose so they will have a full theater. Typically you want to get there about an hour early to get in.

“The Art Of Getting By” Movie Screening And After Party

EventNow reports the movie screening and after party celebration for The Art of Getting by that took place the other night here in New York City.

The event drew a crowd that flocked from all over New York to view and provide their input on this new movie. Will it be a hit or a flop once it hits the box office? We don’t know. We are hoping it will be a hit like all the other tween movies.

The event was hosted by The Cinema Society and famous fashion designer Alice & Olivia that some of the attendees were wearing her designs. Their work is amazing and many people wear their beautiful creations.

The night started with the movie screening that took place at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema. The stars of the movie Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore – this young actor made his debut in the movie August Rush – as well as many other distinguished individuals like Blythe Danner, Jessica Capshaw, Abigail Breslin, Katharine McPhee etc. and that is just many attendees. The movie is about a teen boy who is befriended by the popular girl. It has the usual tween plot, but nonetheless we are hoping to be a huge success.

The night concluded with an after party celebration that took place at Thompson LES. All of the attendees from the movie screening came there to celebrate the movie screening but also to provide their input and their thoughts about what they just saw. The guests got to feast on some very tasty appetizers that the onsite catering staff had created as well as many delicious drinks that were made according to each guest’s specifications.

We are hoping that this movie will get a thumbs up and be a great success at the box office.

Dreadfully dull 'The Art of Getting By' an uninspired teen angst story

Derivative, formulaic and forgettable, "The Art of Getting By" almost put me to napping. By the end I knew that if I had snoozed for an hour, I would have awoke to find I'd missed almost nothing, and this movie is only 84 minutes.

There's just not much to this picture as far as content, style or originality. We've seen plenty of films before about high school slackers - just few this dreadfully dull.

Freddie Highmore proved an intriguing youngster in the odd "August Rush" and a courageous teen in the spooky coming-of-age tale "The Spiderwick Chronicles," but his talents are smothered in this meandering mess.

He plays George, who's like many high schoolers at the beginning of senior year: He's an unfocused loafer, not at all in tune with those academic aces who long ago figured out their next school, their career goals, their mating pool.

George's problem is that he's a serious fatalist. What his teachers tell him is important doesn't seem at all important. He knows that he has more important things to do, but he has no idea what these things are.

You might think of him as a teen Woody Allen, but without the humor.

The movie's problem is that George can't figure out what he wants to do, even by the end of the film. But then neither does his mother (played by Rita Wilson), a short-sighted woman; his mentor (Michael Angarano), an artist lacking in scruples; or his directionless would-be friend/girlfriend/whatever (Emma Roberts).

It is slightly too simple to say that Highmore's uninspired-artist character getting the hook-up with Roberts' hot babe character is the cure to slackerdom, but only slightly. Love or something like it can inspire a young man, an original thought for this film.

In addition to Wilson and Angarano, the film's interesting-but-completely-wasted cast includes Blair Underwood as a principal full of platitudes and Alicia Silverstone as one of George's teachers. You have to think that the "Clueless" star, now guiding teen students, offered some opportunity for irony.

But "The Art of Getting By" wouldn't understand such humor. In the world of first-time feature writer-director Gavin Wiesen, existential angst doesn't do funny.

Movie review: "The Art of Getting By" could try a little harder

George, the hero of "The Art of Getting By," is a high- school senior who has decided to stop doing homework and paying any attention to tests. He isn't tortured, depressed, addicted or anything like that. It has occurred to him that he will die, and therefore, what use is homework?

George is played by Freddie Highmore, who only yesterday was the kid in "August Rush ." He could make a durable leading man because he looks good, and by that I don't mean handsome, I mean kind and likable. He's nice even when he explains to his parents and teachers that he doesn't see the point in graduating from school. He's the spiritual kin of Melville's Bartleby the scrivener, who patiently informed people, "I would prefer not to." By not assigning a fixable reason for George's behavior, the movie sidesteps some of the cliches of the teen problem picture. Not all of them.

There's always romance. George, for example, is attracted to Sally (Emma Roberts), a classmate whom he assumes is somehow beyond his reach. In this he isn't being defeatist but, he thinks, simply realistic. If he were a little more perceptive, he'd realize Sally likes him a lot.

His passivity is both interesting and frustrating because George possesses the answers to all of his problems, and freely chooses to be unhappy. As a result, most of the tension generated by the movie is in ourselves and not in the plot. We want George to succeed, we want him together with Sally, and we even like Dustin (Michael Angarano ), an older artist who likes Sally and likes George too. Dustin is so nice he would step aside from Sally if he thought George was ever going to make a move. Not likely in romance, but there you have it.

George's parents (Rita Wilson and Sam Robards) are concerned but curiously distant. The family is obviously affluent, but isn't obsessed with George graduating or getting into a good school. He is spared counseling or diagnosis, and we later learn about their distractions. But his school is very engaged, especially his principal (Blair Underwood ), his English teacher (Alicia Silverstone ), and his bearded and irascible art teacher (Jarlath Conroy ). They come up with a deadline that would provide more tension if it were not so clear that a film like this requires George to meet it.

"The Art of Getting By" is pleasant and well-acted. It showcases Freddie Highmore and Emma Roberts (Julia's niece), and they are likely to do greater things, but at the end I was wondering, what is the point?
